No flames - serious question. I presume when people have more than 1 kid they buy new bottles for the new kids, correct? What about breast pump parts? My dc is done with this stage so I am deciding if I should just throw all this stuff out. TIA.

I have newborn twins and have been trying the BornFree #1 Nipple which is slow flow. All the sucking seems to be exhausting them. Any recomendations on alternate nipples that might be easier. Thx.

I also hate BF for leaking and too many parts. I loved Avent. But in terms of slow flow, you can just go up to the next nipple flow and solve the problem if you want to stick with BF. The slowest newborn flow was only really good for the baby I breastfed, not my bottle bed only baby.

The best bottles are the Playtex Drop-Ins. Always clean, no air bubbles swallowed, and the nipple is designed to mimic breastfeeding. I am a mom of twins too - still breastfeeding at 12 months old. They used the bottle a bit but I had to return to work after my oldest (singleton) was born and I pumped for him. So he was on the Playtex Drop-ins during the day from 4 months on.
[ Reply | Options ]10.25.09, 10:23 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]ita.....you can start with the lowest flow and anad then try the nextone ups etc. No need to buy designer bottles and the drop-ins are fabulously easy to use.

I used Dr. Browns for my firstborn and even though cleaning all the extra parts was cumbersome, I felt they did help prevent gassiness. When I had the twins a couple of years later, the thought of having to clean two x the bottles plus all the extra parts was a non-starter. Also, the alert level about BPA levels in plastic was really ramping so we switched to Born Free. Not as good bottles overall IMHO but worked fine. I breastfed all three kids in the early going so not familiar with the #1 nipples but like other responders, I have always experimented with more "advanced" nipples when it seemed too laborious for the babies. Good luck... the first year with twins is a challenge!

So I was in my playgroup and we had a new mom come in from Paris with two kids. I have to say the kids were very well behaved and the mom had this amazing nonchalant attitude. The kids played nicely and didn't watch any TV and even resolved a dispute between two other kids, mine included. Do you think European parents just do it better than us Americans?

Yes, unless it means that their little Francois keeps bashing your dd on the head with his toy and the parent doesn't intervene. That is good for kids, and I'll remember that when my ds is bashing yours that you prefer that I ignore that so your kid can toughen up.

[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 06:20 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]1. they act as if the world revolves around their children (it does not) 2. they micromanage every moment of their children's existence - (eg: can we get x teacher? my child can only play with children within their age/socio economic status. etc. 3. in general, they pay waaaay too much attention to them. a little benign neglect is fine. 4. they try to mitigate every potential upset. see item 2.

I felt from the start that American parents are downright paranoid about so many things (above all GERMS!!!, delayed developmental milestones, not getting recommended shots in time...). I feel like American parents are afraid to trust their instincts, therefore they rely heavily on official recommendations from pediatricians, psychologists, teachers, self-help books. And if their children don't fit these general preset definitions of "normality", they panic. Having said this, I always tell my European friends that I really envy American children for their high self-esteem.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 06:21 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]they don't have any instincts. they rely overly on self appointed experts

i think affluent american parents are doing a huge disservice to their children these days - totally paranoid about everything, controlling of every situation, unwilling to let children make mistakes or pay the consequences of them, etc.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 06:41 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]and the less affluent just mimic. with any luck the children of immigrants will take their rightful place and this will all be moot. nature abhors a vacuum

Judging by the answers here, Americans believe that you can draw conclusions from a single anecdote. I know a mom from Chicago who is especially laid back and her kids are well-behaved compared to the moms I know in my NYC suburb. Do you all believe that Chicago moms are better parents than those in the suburb in which I live? How silly.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 06:46 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]i posted above and am a laid back mom, but am def. not the norm. i don't think people are drawing conclusions based solely on op's post, but on their experience.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 06:56 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]What experience do they have with European moms? The comparison group is with European moms who live in the US -- a very small group and most posters here don't even know a single one.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 07:01 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]good point. i have some experience with european moms abroad, (and of course, everyone follows america, so their laid back attitudes are a'changin'), and think the contrast is valid.

[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 07:13 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]The problem is far more serious than in the US. My point is that it's ridiculous to draw some overall conclusions about who is a good parent based on a single issue. Today's so-called horrible American parents are a reflection of their own parents' childrearing. I just find the critics on here silly.

Do you really think people read the post and said, wow, all Americans are like this? No. The anecdote was an example, which numerous moms - based on their own experience - agree with. Are you really this simple?

Now that I am going to be a second time mom, the thing that I find amusing/annoying is all of the baby advice books and magazines that I read the first time around. Now I look at them and think that so much of it is such a load of crap. Everything is exaggerated to either scare us, or think that some aspects of parenting can be so simple if you do a,b, and c. Kids are treasures, but they are not fragile and parenting is difficult and that's okay. It doesn't mean one is a bad parent or that one has a bad child -- it's just life.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 06:58 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]the problem is that most people take this nonsense as gospel. a surfeit of experts, i tell you.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 07:00 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Yes, and I think it speaks more to a class of parents (I include myself in this class). They are people who've been successful all of their lives and have gotten there through studying, hard work, etc. and so we have a particular respect for books and experts and want to make sure we are successful in childrearing as we are in everything else. Fortunately, I never took that stuff as gospel, though I did consult it. There were too many extremes and at the end of the day, I also felt my parents were great parents and so I thought of what worked with me. (even that doesn't always work since my child is not me.) At some point you've got to fly solo and go on instinct. So that's where I am now...

FYI for those being so critical of US parents: Do you realize that in Britain, a huge number of parents are skipping vaccinations for their babies because of fear of autism and other issues? It's a much higher % of parents than in US and a real public health problem for the Brits. Do you want to draw some conclusions about that? I know French moms who let their kids watch non-stop tv -- many violent kids' cartoons. What conclusion should I draw from that?
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 07:05 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]that they aren't as intense about bs and are also prone to make some mistakes, and that's fine too.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 07:09 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I know. I find the American parent bashing pretty amusing. I think there are valid points about the extremists, but geez not all parents are like that. (Also, I think this description is very specific to NYC parents.)

[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 07:13 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Having travelled frequently across the country, I can tell you that yes, parents in other parts of the country are like this. I mean, not all of them are scheduled with enrichment programs within an inch of their lives, but the parents *are* more permissive and let the kids run their lives. There was a post on this a couple of weeks ago.

There's this thing called temperament. Signed by American mom with laid back kid who doesn't "helicopter" (I hate that word) but has never had to stress about child's behavior because of her temperament. It's not a brag--it's who she is. Later in life when she's a yes girl because she needs to be liked too much, that's when our tough parenting trials are going to begin.
[ Reply | Options ]09.01.09, 08:50 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]yes and no. i think you can definitely spoil a child even with a good temperament. i just think european moms -- and not to generalize -- have a natural suspicion of experts and because so much is multi-generational and they have so much support from gov. in terms of child care, there is a culture that understands and support child raising. not like our culture, that claims to be all about kids but uses fear and media manipulation to keep us buying products and mistrust our own instincts. i guess you can say i blame it on the baby industry and the fact that we live in this insane baby culture.

due with first baby in 2 months, trying to decide on which bottles I should buy, any input? Dr Browns seems like a lot of cleaning, so was thinking AVENT or BORN, thanks!
12 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]08.27.09, 10:12 AM [ Flag ]When I was looking for bottles some lady actually told me not to get the Dr. Browns b/c they were impossible to clean. I love the Playtex drop-ins. Every other type of bottle allows to much air to be ingested and can cause gas. I tried a bunch of bottles and dd was not happy. Then I bought the Playtex drop-ins and that was it. She loved them.
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 10:21 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I like Playtex, too. Do not get Born Free. Do a search and you'll find an email I got from their customer service that was beyond ridiculous. If you have a dishwasher, I like Dr. Brown's. Otherwise I say Avent or Playtex. My MIL hated Avent because she said they leaked but I never had a problem.
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 10:55 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Avent does leak.

I loved drop-ins too but felt guilty about the waste. The other downside is if you're traveling you have to take the drop-ins as well as the bottle.
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 11:03 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]You should read all the data about BPA and then decide whether you're worried about it or not. (No right answer necessarily.) If you're worried, go for BPA-free bottles. Used Medela.
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 11:19 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I use the drop-ins also. We were told to get a couple different kinds and see which nipple the baby liked best. Ours only took the drop-ins. But there are flaws - there is the waste of the liner, plus it's another thing you always have to buy. And some of them come with flat caps rather than the domed caps so you have to fuss with the nipple.
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 11:20 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]If you're planning to pump w/ Medela, just use their bottles. They have them in 5 and 8oz now, and it's much easier to have just one set of bottles where all parts are interchangeable (sp?)
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 11:21 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I just had a baby in June and I use the glass Dr. Brown's. They are no big deal at all. I only bought six small and two large and we wash them out every day, or at least put them in the dishwasher -- nipples, bottles as well as the plastic things on the inside. Go glass. Less waste and better for your kid.
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 12:09 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Haha! If only I could have "choosen" my daughters' bottles...both of them were BF and in both cases I had to try every bottle on the market before they would take one. Both were a PITA too- Playtex drops in (hard to measure for powdered formula) and born free (too many parts)
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 12:15 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Medela (if you are pumping and using their pumps) - everything interchangeable, BPA free.
[ Reply | Options ]08.27.09, 12:29 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]Another vote for the drop-ins. I breast fed but often pumped bc of work so I just poured the milk in. Can't remember if it was more difficult when I started using powder formula though, might have been more messy.

which bpa free bottles for baby do you recommend and why? born free, avent or dr browns?
13 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]08.11.09, 10:27 AM [ Flag ]Absolutely not Born Free. They leak and their customer service is terrible. I like both Avent and Dr. Brown, and would add Playtex Dropins to the list.
[ Reply | Options ]08.11.09, 10:28 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]np: I could not agree more. BF bottles are terrible. Mine also leaked and no response from customer service. Plus they have so many little parts to clean.
[ Reply | Options ]08.11.09, 10:30 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]True Born Free leak, but have to disagree with the comment of bad customer service, they replace 7 inserts, caps and nipples for my leaky bottles. They work fine now with the new ones. I was probably really lucky or OR didn't have a good representative
[ Reply | Options ]08.11.09, 10:30 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]I'm posting here their response to me when I emailed them about the leaky bottle: "The reason why the nipple is collapse is because the slit on your venting system which is close or you're tightening the collar to tight. The venting contains two pieces a white piece with three holes and a clear silicon piece. The silicon piece has a nip like next to the tad. If you give it a little sneeze you'll the slit. The slit close when your washing or sterilizing your bottle. When the slit is open bubbles will be forming in the bottle and when it's close the nipple will collapse. If you have nay other questions concerns please feel free to call or email me personally."

OP, sorry we got sidetracked your question is about bottles, we all agree that born free leak so stay away regardless of the fact that they will replace the accesories or not. I used Dr. Brown's with my first and never had any trouble with them. Lots of parts to wash some may say but it didn't bother me.

The Dr. Brown bottles screwed into the Mandela breast pump so they were convenient when I was pumping at work (bigger than the bottles that you get for the breat pump) but my bs wouldn't drink from them. We used Avent. If you gt those I'd recommend the sealing disks for when you're on the go.

[ Reply | Options ]08.11.09, 11:07 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Both born free and avent leaked, though differently. I preferred to just use the medela bottles and free hospital nipples and had no probs with air/gas.

[ Reply | Options ]06.18.09, 10:49 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]i don't think it's neurotic to take away a street-bought piece of jewelry from a 1 year-old's mouth. my dd put lots of stuff in her mouth and i was generally ok with it (builds immune system) but you have to draw the line. most important is that it's not too small, so if this child wants to chew on her sunglasses, toys and books etc, like mine did, that's fine. jewelry? no.
[ Reply | Options ]06.18.09, 11:20 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]
that can't be the entire list for a one-year old?? do you mean to say your kids are not allowed to put toys in their mouths? what about the endless things they encounter on their travels through the house, like CD cases, books, the corners of furniture etc. something must be getting misunderstood here because i've never seen a mom that strict with her kids. playtime must be full of anxiety and frustration!

np: i think for this particular mother - the OP - it is best for her to keep it as basic as possible. She was letting baby play with and put a necklace in her mouth.
[ Reply | Options ]06.18.09, 10:42 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]and...? i'm pretty sure that babies have played with and gummed their mothers' jewelery since the beginning of civilization. nothing in the post says that the baby was doing it unsupervised or that the jewelery in question was even a necklace or anything small enough to choke on.

[ Reply | Options ]06.18.09, 10:58 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]this is always the most obtuse argument. "well back in the day they did so-and-so and everything was just fine". fact is, more children died from things you wouldn't even think of doing today. in the '50s they'd send your newborn home in the car with you and recommend you put them on the floor of the passenger seat. still a good idea?
[ Reply | Options ]06.18.09, 11:30 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]
right! if she's asking about THAT, it's best to advise her to keep more than the obvious out of her child's reach ;)

There was a story recently (sorry can't remember where it took place) where a child swallowed a toy from a grocery store vending machine and died of lead poisoning. It was a little charm or something similar and was basically composed entirely of lead. I would be very careful about letting a baby suck on anything that's not you or a toy that's stamped as safe. Even w/o swallowing, it can be made of something that can leach into their mouth by sucking.
[ Reply | Options ]06.18.09, 07:52 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]Yup I am not paranoid about these things in general but our local Toronto newspaper went and tested trinkets, toys etc from both dollar stores and reputable toy stores. Lots of lead (all made in China, I believe). One of the toy stores had paid more for stuff a supplier said was non-toxic.
[ Reply | Options ]06.18.09, 08:27 AM [ Flag | link to this post ]apocryphal tale. it would take a lot of exposure to lead for it to kill you. probably child died from choking on object.

Sigg has a weird liner inside that may or may not contain chemicals. The company won't divulge its composition, has been rather cagey about it. google the story

op all the stainless models expect you to unscrew cap to drink if they can also accommodate hole for caribener, so I am opting for this Nalgene one: http://www.amazon.com/NALGENE-Tritan-Grip-N-Gulp-BPA-Free-Bottle/dp/B001NCDE2U/ref=pd_sim_sg_21

Just bought a brand-new Sigg bottle for $22. My second time using it and there's rust in the screw-on part, on the inside. Anyone know how to get this off? Would rather not have to take it back to the store (no receipt) but for $22 for a freaking water bottle I expect it to not have rust.

np: I always threw diapers into plastic bag from the store, tied in a knot and threw out my service door into the garbage. Why would I want to keep dirty diapers in my apt., for a minute? I never bought into the 'diaper genie". (Maybe if I lived in a suburban house and the real garbage meant a walk outside. But NYC apt? No way). I also never bought into the wipe warmer and never missed it.

Loved my Bjorn, but ditto on Diaper Genie. One day, realized I had dropped all the diapers that day into the nursery trash, and was sitting on the floor stuffing them into the diaper genie. Lightbulb moment -- that I could just walk the trash bag out the back door instead - never used the diaper genie again.

Ditto on the Bjorn - used it a couple times and stopped
[ Reply | Options ]05.19.09, 04:38 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]If you live in a house where you need to take the garbage outside, then the Genie really does have a use. If you just chuck the waste down a garbage shoot every couple of hours, then not so much. Granted, this is more of an issue once the poop actually smells bad. And it will smell very bad.

I also would wait before buying an expensive breast pump system. You might have trouble, not be able to (like me). I was really glad that I waited on this (was thinking of renting one actually, wasn't sure but knew it could be bought new in a snap and waited) because it turned out I never ever needed it. And it's expensive.

Don't believe everyone about the Genie, especially if you live in Manhattan with garbage pick up three times a week. It is absolutely used in THIS home. Can't imagine life without it.
[ Reply | Options ]05.19.09, 06:33 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]If you live in Manhattan, you most likely live in an apartment with a garbage room on your floor. If you live in a house (like I do), then your garbage goes outside.

Sleep positioners, horrible thermometers that would read the forehead, diaper genie, swaddle blankets, any under 3 mos clothes that buttoned up the back.
[ Reply | Options ]05.19.09, 06:49 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]honestly anything that has been "created" to solve a problem or do a task that people manage to do for years without. Basically anything your mother would say "what is that? why would you need that?" i.e. a bottle warmer --give it cold or just use a warm glass of water to take off the chill, sleep positioners, newborns don't move. you could leave them on a countertop and do your nails, they won't go anywhere. once they are able to move they should be encouraged to do so, not prevented. baby food makers or food mills, if you have a blender you are all good. Bottle sterilizers, first you don't need to sterlize, just wash them well, second your dishwasher is way hot enough, if you don't have a dishwasher you can buy bags for your microwave to sterilize things. Fancy diaper bags. Don't me wrong, I love fancy bags, but any bag can be a diaper bag. Just buy a great comfy tote that you like. That said, there are a few things that are exceptions to this rule 1) Miracle Swaddle Blanket. Way better for swaddling than a reg. blanket, 2) Bouncy chair or swing, excersaucer for when they get older-something you can put the baby in so you can pee or shower and he won't scream for 5-10 minute, very helpful 3) those highcahirs that attach to the table and don't take up any room in your house.
[ Reply | Options ]05.19.09, 07:16 PM [ Flag | link to this post ]sleep positioner was a must for us. got it when baby was diagnosed w/ acid reflux (which most babies have to some degree) and now life is good, since it elevates him a little or he can go on his side.
