sorry to beat a dead horse but........at pizzeria waiting for food, 5 yr old kid puts fork in glass + exclaims, cool mom, look-it's bigger in water. You (a)engage him in the science of it OR (b) tell him it is not good manners to play with fork. take it out.

hey, those of us who disagree might say that you were a lazy mom who couldn't be bothered to teach her kid manners... except that most of us couldn't care LESS what you're teaching (or NOT) your kids. Personally? I am teaching my kids manners at a young age. Big deal. Would I yell at them? No. Do I have more relaxed standards at home? Yeah. Uptight? Laughable - but hey, you want to judge me? Go ahead.

LOL - ditto! Thing is, you actually care about all of this so much - and I don't. In our house, manners are just normal, not a big deal. We have a messy, silly, fun life - that includes some structure when we're eating out, whether it's a pizza place or a really nice restaurant. People like you who make such a big deal over this? Super-annoying.

say 'very interesting how it looks bigger when magnified by the water! but honey, we're in a restaurant and it's not polite to play with the cutlery. let's put the fork back on the table.'

Yes, at which point the mom might say, "Yeah, dude - it's really cool... but that's something we should test out at home."
