    • I didn't click on this link - but I thought it was more like 50/50 in the US. Is that what the article says?

      • 56% on 2006, and in coastal cities circumcision rates are even lower- I think it said 43% in new york city-

        • 43% is the hospital rate, most likely. Many jews and muslims circumcise in a religious ceremony after baby is released from hospital. So, I would guess NYC rate is probably higher than the 43% reported rate.

          • I don 't think muslims circumcise in a religious ceremony outside the hospital.

            • I'm not an expert, but I think it depends. Nevertheless, they also rarely circumcise at birth (traditional is at 7yrs old, but 7th day to puberty also happens) and so still may not be included in the statistics. In any case, the sheer size of jewish population in NYC where out-of-hospital circumcision is very common is enough to skew these stats.

          • Circumcision is not banned in Australia. It is not in favor, yes. That doesn't discredit the physicians, though. They know their stuff just as much as their US colleagues.

            • Royal Australasian College of Physicians "After extensive review of the literature the Royal Australasian College of Physicians reaffirms that there is no medical indication for routine neonatal circumcision." (those last nine words are in bold on their website, and almost all the men responsible for this statement will be circumcised themselves, as the male circumcision rate in Australia in 1950 was about 90%. "Routine" circumcision is now *banned* in public hospitals in Australia in all states except one.)

              • Is the text within parens a quote or from you? Even if it was banned why would you think that the Australian doctors should not be experts in circumcision?

      • i thought it was pretty good, actually. she certainly addressed the issues that come up here over and over and she didn't come across as a ranting hysteric like most people on one side or the other do.

      • OMG, the man sucking the blood resulting from the cut and infecting the children with herpes? disgusting. what parent in their right mind would allow this to happen? Does this practice still go on?

    • my Ob says it's about 50/50 in NYC. There was a post here last week I think, consensus was 50/50 in NYC (except for those who deny #s are anywhere close to this.)

    • in the last nhanes study that asked (which was about 1997, i think?) the circumcision prevalence was about 80%. next time that nhanes reports a new number, that will become the figure that is bandied about. national studies by the cdc often provide the info that you hear all of the time.

          • I know most of my friend's ds's are circumcised and my dh really wanted my son circumcised. But due to a medical issue at birth the doc told us to wait. Ended up convincing my dh not to do it later on.

      • agree. i feel like it's a great big non-issue. do what you want and don't act like someone else is a barbarian for doing differently.
