  • It seemed too good to be true, and it was. Asked on here a while ago about unemployment and a new job as a real estate broker with only commission. A couple of people said, sure, you can claim unemployment until you actually make money (which could be days, weeks, months...). Nope. As soon as you are doing anything which MAY lead to pay in the future, you are considered employed. If you work 4 or more days, you can't claim. Work 3 days and you get 1/4 of your UI, 2 days, you get half, one day you get 3/4. You can apparently still claim while you are studying to get your license, etc., but once you're really working, you're on your own. Just another case of "don't believe everything you read on UB"!

    • Sorry, but why would you rely on an anon board for this type of help?

      • I didn't rely at all! Just asked since I was here, to see if anyone had experience. Got answers (just for fun), and then called to check. I'd never take UB's word for anything remotely serious!

    • that rule is ridiculous, and I don't know anyone who is completely honest to the DOL about "working" before actually making money.

      • OP: I actually understand it. Say you work 3 months and then sell a $1.5M apartment. If you get half of the 6% commission, that's $45K. Do that once every 3 months and you're grossing $180K. It'd be nice to be able to collect and then pay back once you start earning, I guess, but I don't think someone making that kind of money should be collecting benefits. I agree that lots of people are probably, ahem, creative in their claims -- and really the questionnaire I answer weekly would allow me to say I am not working F/T and not making money this week, I've not refused any jobs, etc. truthfully.
