Anyone have a gyn they love -- am an older mom and would prefer to avoid an ob/gyn. I prefer someone who specializes in menopause issues, since that's where I am now. I am a picky and well-informed patient, have gone to something like 15-20 NYC practices in the last 35 years and have never really found anyone great. I'd like a really smart woman who pays attention and doesn't have wildly disorganized office staff. Does this exist in NYC? Thanks!

OP-Yes, it's me. I like doctors who have well-organized office staff, who communicate well and value my health over profits and their convenience. Someone who actually looks at my chart carefully before prescribing over the phone, who keeps her nails trimmed kind of short, considering where she plans to insert them, unreasonable stuff like that. Plus I want a female gyn who doesn't do ob. So yeah, I'm a PITA, but I still need a good gyn.
[ Reply | Options ]YOU want the convenience of having a gyn who doesn't do OB. Gyns who don't do OB almost always make that decision because they don't want the inconvenience of not working standard office hours!

are you an OBGYN? well since my father was and I know just a little bit about it-it is true.
[ Reply | Options ]exactly. It's just expecting too much of a medical practice for them to meet each of the standards this woman has.
[ Reply | Options ]OP -- That's strange, because I've used the same GP and ophthalmologist for the past twenty years and where I don't always agree w/ every aspect of their approach I feel that they take their time enough to get a basic picture of my condition and don't overbook their practice. What do you feel is unreasonable in my list of expectations? I did have a fabulous gyn when I lived in Paris, but the system there is completely different. She answered her own phone, worked out of her apartment, didn't use an assistant and spent a good forty minutes with each patient. Of course, I realize that can never happen here!

I was in the same situation -- ob doesn't do gyn, needed a new doctor. I insisted on a woman, but ob's office recommended a man (in the same practiced). I went once, planned to switch afterwards, but he was GREAT. It's Dr. Post (in Sharma's office at Cornell). He's older, tons of experience, really kind manner, knows his stuff. Give him a try. Only does gyn, specializes in older patients.
[ Reply | Options ]^^ by planned to switch, I mean that before I saw him, I assumed I'd only go to him until I found a woman. But he was so great that I've stuck with him.
[ Reply | Options ]OP -- Thanks, I have gotten some very enthusiastic rec's for male gyns. But I feel as though I might be self-conscious about talking about things that already make me feel pretty icky about menopause w/ a male doc, like sexuality issues, etc. If I don't find a female doc I like soon, I guess I might reconsider.

Are you expecting something special from your dh for Valentine's Day?
- Yes, and he's in big trouble if he forgets.
- Yes, but it's not something I care about.
- No, thank goodness.
