    • Geneva School of Manhattan. But you need to be comfortable with the religious aspect of the school.

    • The School at Columbia has afterschool chess from K up to 8. They also have chess at lunch program starting in 3rd grade.

    • PS 195 Brooklyn - I suspect alot of schools offer it; might be better to narrow it down to the schools you are interested in

    • Do you mean afterschool or as part of the curriculum? NEST has it in the classroom from K-2 and afterschool from K up

    • Which school does not offer chess at least as afterschool activity? I would never want it to be part of the curriculum.

          • I was a doubter at first, too, but I've come to really see the benefits of chess in the curriculum, especially since I see that the afterschool classes are usually 80+% boys and in class instruction is the only instruction that many girls get. I've seen such a change in my dd since learning chess, esp. re thinking ahead and spatial relations. Here is a better summary (page 9 of this link) http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache:_OPdy0bBvQcJ:www.psmcd.net/otherfiles/BenefitsOfChessInEdScreen2.pdf+advantages+of+chess&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

              • Argh, I give up - just google The Benefits of Chess in Education and you'll see the report. But most importantly, it's a way to incorporate logic, strategic thinking and math into the curriculum in a creative, fun, and universal way

                • Ok. And then there are millions of other things that would have the same results. I think whatever is taught in chess belongs into a math curriculum.

                  • That is a nice thought but math curricula don't really work that way. And I disagree that there are millions of other things that would have the same results. Name five.

                    • Anything that drills logic, patterns, forward thinking. Hell, even cooking can teach you a lot of mathematical concepts in a practical way.

                      • Fine, but you haven't named any activity that accomplishes these things, is universally used, and is practical and not costly in a classroom setting

                        • I am not a math teacher. If I was I would be able to answer you. I am just concerned about making chess mandatory - it's a game that some kids like and some don't, no matter how much they like or hate math.

                        • That would be true of any subject, though. My dc hates Spanish class - should that be cut from the curriculum? And I would argue that Spanish in elementary school is way more of a waste than chess!

                        • Chess is just an extension to math. Pretty redundant. How is that comparable to a foreign language?

                        • It's not redundant, it's complementary. It's like having a second period of math once a week, but delivered in a the guise of a game.

                    • Btw, my DD is great in math but hates chess. So does my DH. Chess is just another thing that is unnecessary and kids will either hate it or love. Why forcing it?

                      • You are not forcing it, just introducing it to kids. Exposure does not hurt anyone. Some kids hate music, art or gym. Should they just not offer it either?

                        • ITA. My kids love chess and hate math. Exposure and opportunities to learn similar skills in different ways is always good, imo. It's not like their math lessons are getting cut.

          • Chess is great at teaching logic and critical thinking skills. Tests have shown children who learn/play chess perform better on standardized tests than children who don't. At our school it is part of our curriculum, 1x week.

    • Isn't it pretty much universal these days? I'm really curious what's behind the chess craze. Probably same reason they're all offering "strings" -- parents think it builds bigger brains! Of course, ds is in both chess and strings, so I'm not criticizing, just acknowledging that I'm part of the herd.
