All Dolled Up

What's not to like about a cloth doll? It's soft, it's squishy, it's cozy to snuggle up with. 'Nuff said.

But Raggedy Ann, with her black button eyes and red-and-white-striped sox, is so last year. Today's tots – or should we say today's parents – demand something with a mod twist. An it doll so to speak.

Nurseryworks – one of the more recent players on the scene offering mid-century-inspired baby furniture – may have created just the model. Made out of fabrics by textile artist Rosemary Hallgarten, and created by renowned Portuguese doll maker Rosa Pomar, these unique playmates extend the centuries-old tradition of handmade cloth dolls beyond folk art. The graphic patterns and unexpected color combinations are more Austin Powers than Jane Austen. All-natural and washable, they manage to balance cute and style with aplomb.

But then, Pomar is the granddaughter of famed Portuguese painter Julio Pomar, and Nurseryworks' founders commissioned the successful L.A. based design team Glenn Lawson and Grant Fenning to create their debut line and the celebrated Hallgarten to design the bedding.

A doll that measures up to this pedigree was bound to be cool.
