Tooning
into Reality
Here's
a show that speaks to the issues of motherhood in a whole new way.
Digital media artist Roxanne Wolanczyk lives in New York City and
is the mom of an 11-month-old. If this sounds familiar, then you'll
get a kick out of The Princess Series, an ongoing online
presentation told through Flash animations and exhibition of animations
and prints opening this week at the Phatory Art Gallery.
Speaking through the character of the Princess, Wolanczyk questions
the paradoxes of modern life and her own ideals, hoping for a happy
ending. The narratives are humorous and clever portrayals of the
Princess's inner world.
Recently
the subject of the series has turned to pregnancy and motherhood
as the Princess confronts her new reality: how should she identify
herself now; how will she deal with the rather mundane daily existence
of life with a newborn; how will she and her prince live as a threesome
in a small space (for alas, she is a Princess without a fortune);
and will she ever have time to read a book again?
Wolanczyk has been working on The Princess Series since 2002.
Her conceptual art has been displayed at The Brooklyn Museum and
Cynthia Broan Gallery, and has been included in online exhibits
based in England, Argentina and the Netherlands.
With the Princess facing so many of the same life changes and challenges
of all new moms, you've got to wonder if this is life imitating
art or art imitating life? Either way, we're pretty sure you'll
be able to relate.
The Princess Series can be viewed online at prettysite.com.
The Show at the Phatory, 618 East 9th St., opens February 16th
(reception 7-9pm) and runs through March 26th, 212-777-7922 or
thephatory.com.
