Finger Lickin' Good

If you're anything like most busy moms, you end up ordering takeout way more than you like to admit. Which means that the pizza-Chinese-sushi options are getting very old indeed. Hail Dirty Bird To-Go, a newcomer on the scene specializing in soul-oriented comfort food with a modern twist. There is a small retail space with counter seating, but the real name of the game here is delivery.

With a menu created by Rising Star Chefs (the husband-wife team of Allison Vines-Rushing and Slade Rushing), the emphasis is on organically-raised, free-range chicken in all of its glorious forms. From double-dipped, fried chicken brined in the chefs' tangy spice blend to golden brown rotisserie roasted chicken (both available in family portions), these birds are tasty enough to feed to company.

Inspired by the Rushing's Louisiana roots (they run the Longbranch restaurant in Abita Springs, LA), all dishes are served with homemade pepper vinegar and a series of delicious side orders – dirty rice, chicken-n-stars, mac-n-cheese and seasonal organic vegetables. Also available are great, kid-friendly, greens – complete with shredded chicken on top or in a chopped salad (a perfect light summer meal). And a bag of six freshly baked "bad-ass" cookies washed
down with homemade lemonade or organic iced tea complete the meal nicely.

The Rushings are classically trained chefs, with experience working at Alain Ducasse, Brennan's in New Orleans and the East Village favorite, Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar. This time around, however, the duo has turned their talents to creating delicious, slow-food meals for the fast-lane crowd.

The happy result? You'll never look at that stack of take-out menus the same way again.

Open daily 11am to 10pm; 204 W. 14th St., 212-620-4838,
