Mac-and-Cheese Whiz

It's tough to find fault with your basic macaroni and cheese. But why stop at pasta, cream and cheese? If you're striving to expand your little one's palate, journey into the world of S'Mac - short for Sarita's Macaroni & Cheese - the latest one-stop shop for new twists on the classic dish that your whole family will love.

This East Village eatery offers more than ten varieties of the classic, including 4 Cheese - a molten overload of Muenster, American, Gorgonzola, and sharp Cheddar cheeses. All dishes can be made with either elbow macaroni or whole wheat pasta, and the crispy breadcrumb topping and mix-ins are optional. There's also a choice of Gruyere, Manchego, Mozzarella and Brie cheeses mixed with roasted figs, shiitake mushrooms or fresh rosemary. Fresh herbs and such ingredients as shallots, basil and fennel provide the perfect hint of flavor for little taste buds.

Carnivore combos include the Cheeseburger - a mix of ground beef, onions, garlic, ketchup and mustard with a combination of American and Cheddar cheeses. And if you want to make sure they get their veggies, try Garden Lite, a composition of Cheddar and Parmesan with roasted cauliflower and portobello mushrooms, broccoli and scallions. All dishes come in Nosh (appetizer), Major Munch (entree) and Mongo (feed the family) portions, and are perfect for eating in or taking out.

Sound a little cheesy? Only in the best way.

Open Tuesday - Sunday, 12-11pm (Tues. until 10pm); 345 East 12th St., 212-358-7912, smacnyc.com.
