The New Nursery

It's not just names that expecting parents have to select (forget Sally, Dick or Jane—think Emlyn, Everest or Price), but the furnishings in the nursery as well. No longer interested in simply decking them out in pastel pinks and blues and calling it a day, the name of today's game is high functionality mixed with sleek design. From economical (if unpronounceable) IKEA models, to more high-end options such as Netto Collection and Dwell bedding, innovative and contemporary style is finally creeping into the baby's room.

You can add to that list Nurseryworks, a new Los Angeles-based company that offers mid-century-inspired baby furniture and bedding designed to fit a modern home. The collection features all the essentials from longtime-collaborating designers Glenn Lawson and Grant Fenning including crib, changing table, dresser, and a rocking chair so sleek you would be proud to move it into your living room (who can say that about a glider?).

Bedding comes via the studio of textile artist Rosemary Hallgarten, and features contemporary graphic patterns in unexpected colors that compliment the collection. Fitted sheets, pillow shams, crib skirts, bumpers and quilts made of 100% cotton, available individually or in sets, go one big, abstract step beyond basic baby design.

Be forewarned: Once your nursery looks this sophisticated, the rest of your house may have to grow up, too.
